Hi again,

I spent the last week in Majorca - so I haven't been making much progress. Fortunately I've done at least something.

#9 - finish the stories I'm writing
For some strange, mysterious reason I find myself most inspired when I'm in a company I can't talk freely to - that being mostly my family. During the week I had no access to any computers (I can't write by hand, it's too slow and I get frustrated), so I couldn't actually write. However, I made some major changes in the plot of one story, and added some great details to another (which cleared up the development of the protagonist - I've had problems with his past before, now I solved it!)

I'm excited to write again; to be inspired to write again: hopefully I'll have time to work with the stories today, or tomorrow.

#11 - read 99 books
#12 - review the books on goodreads.com
I read Fingersmith by Sarah Waters while in Majorca: I recommend it to everyone. My haphazard review can already be found in Goodreads.

I also began to read a book called The Autograph Man by Zadie Smith, but it was in the bookshelf of our rented apartment and I didn't have time to finish it. I hope I'll find it in Finland somewhere, it seemed interesting.

And.. yeah, while waiting for the flight to Finland in Düsseldorf, I bought the infamous Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. .. Yeah. I've read about 180 pages so far. Believe me, it's not good.

I'm also planning to read the first Sarah Rees Brennan book soon! In English, please.
M gave me her copy of the Finnish translation and I must say, it's not very good - I can't bring myself to read it.

#22 - weigh 50kg or less
My weight is 50.2kg right now.

#34 - finish everything in this university before leaving
Sent an e-mail about this.. document I really, really can't explain in English but what will be necessary to have if I plan to make my current major English Translation into a minor in the new university. No answer yet - I'm not sure if it's taken care of or not?

#40 - re-learn German
Well, I passed the Beginner's Course with a grade 4 (scale being from 1-5). It's OK, I guess.
While flying to Majorca, I had to wait in Tegel, Berlin and later in Düsseldorf International for our flight for 8 hours in total - I spoke some German but understood it even better. I should spend some time in German, maybe next summer? - I'm sure my language skills would get better.

#80 - find a perfect pair of sneakers
They're pink, costed 10 euros, but they are not perfect.

#86 - go hiking overnight
We went hiking for 15 kilometers, but it wasn't overnight. Sad.

Still not giving up :)

I've been very quiet for a very long time, but to my defense: these months have been also extremely busy in more than one way. In this update, I will report my successes/failings/progress for every goal I'm trying to reach.

1. run a marathon
I've been trying to fit running to my schedule, but it seems it's getting more difficult every day. My knee has acted up again, I've been too busy, I've been too lazy, the weather has been horrible etc.

I'm planning to wake up earlier each day and go for a jog. Let's see how that goes.

I've been eyeing this half-marathon which is held in September in Tampere, but we'll see.. I'm not putting pressure on myself with this right now.

2. run a marathon abroad
Look #1; although I'm planning to run a marathon in Finland first.

3. run at least 5 times a week
look #1; I'm planning to run each morning instead of evenings/nights. This is only an experiment, I'm not sure how it will work: I've done it before, and it seems I feel too tired/empty/hungry at mornings to run as fast/long as I could.

4. be able to do 50 pushups
No progress with this one. Maybe I could do pushups after my morning run?

5. join a nice gym
No progress. I have absolutely no money; I have to borrow money from my parents even to eat. I'm planning to change this by October, though!

6. get stomach definition
No progress. I've been doing some sit-ups but very lazily. Maybe a routine, after my morning run?

I guess it's worth mentioning that I have a structural defect on my lower back so I can't do normal sit-ups - that's what hindering me the most, also psychologically, I guess.

7. get arm definition
look #4 My arms have been getting more fat if anything :D

8. stretch every day
Some progress! I've taken the habit of streching my legs when I'm waiting for the water to boil. And I'm streching my neck all the time. Still, it's not quite enough.

9. finish the stories I’m writing
No progress. I haven't had the time to write - I know it's an excuse, but still. I'm also feeling quite inadequate - I feel like I'm no good as a writer.

10. win nanowrimo 2009
Obviously, no progress, as the competition is in November.

11. read 99 books
Weeell, some progress: I've read three books more - the ones I need to read for the entrance exams. A book is a book.

12. review the books on Goodreads.com
I haven't been doing that, mostly because I consider the books to be read for other reasons than pleasure.

13. re-read the Harry Potter saga.
No progress- maybe during the summer?

14. read 5 books from the Banned Books list
No progress - I haven't even checked what is in the list..

15. write at least 500 words a day
Some progress - I'm attending a creative writing class at the moment, so I'm almost forced to write something every day :) I've also been text roleplaying with two different people, and I consider that writing.

16. read more poetry
Some progress - I have been reading poetry - mostly on the Internet. I hope I'll manage to read actual poetry books sometime soon.

17. keep a mood diary to find out what the hell is wrong with my head
Some progress: I have been keeping a diary, not daily or even weekly but..

18. consume caffeine and sugar only once a week
No progress - this spring will be very stressful for me. I'm not going to stress about nutritional things among everything else - I'll try this again in a less stressful time.

19. drink at least 2 glasses of water each day
Progress! I've been carrying a water bottle with me when I'm in a class/in a self-study/reading room at the library - and that is often.

20. learn to yoga
No progress - this is definately not the time for new hobbies.

21. have one overly-healthy day a week
No progress - look #18

22. maintain a healthy weight, nevertheless not more than 50kg
Some progress - my weight is ~50kg

23. clean and moisturise my skin every day
Some progress - with my face, mostly. It's too expensive to moisturise my whole body :( soon.
24. go to dentist.
No progress - still too scared. Still no money for it.

25. pluck my eyebrows
No progress - :D Ok, this is.. stupid, but I've lost my tweezers.. so.

26. go mostly vegan
No progress - check #18

27. be personally involved in politics and/or activism
No progress - however, planning to do this next fall.

28. donate blood
No progress. Why? I don't know. I really should. Maybe soon?

29. stop wasting food
Some progress - I've been trying to be mindful with my food. Milk expires sometimes, I should pay more attention to the expiration dates. And some fruits have gone bad and had to be thrown away too, but..

30. buy most of my clothes used
Some progress - I've been buying mostly used clothes. Although, I'm going to buy new clothes tomorrow for my vacation. I'm trying to make visits to the second hand shops more often.

31. donate the clothes I don’t actually even wear
You know what? Progress! I've in a process of either selling or donating away the clothes I don't really wear - or shouldn't wear, which is something like 2/3 of my clothes.

32. carry a reusable grocery bag with me
Progress - most often I've been doing this, and refusing to take any small plastic bags with small purchases.

33. get into university (to study journalism)
No progress - for the obvious reason, the entrance exams are in June.

34. finish everything in the current university before going away
No progress - uhhh. I might be screwed with my ECTs, but we'll see. I have to finish some other things too - very simple, but I've been shy/lazy.

35. study at least 6 hours a week for the entrance exams
With this I can proudly say - most definately progress. I've been studying more like 6 hours a day.

36. get involved in said university (student clubs, guilds..)
37. have a gpa of 4.5 in said university
38. decide what the subject of my Bachelor’s Degree will be
39. begin to work early on said degree

No progress for obvious reasons - not in the university yet.

40. relearn German
Progress! Last Friday I took the exam of Beginner's German and it felt so easy. I still have a long way to go - and an oral exam on Wednesday, but it's a good start :)

41. relearn French
42. relearn Swedish
43. relearn the Greek alphabet

No progress - I've been focusing on other things. I can't do everything at the same time (unfortunately).

44. read the newspapers thoroughly
Some progress - I've been reading the newspaper (Aamulehti) every morning, but not as thoroughly as I probably should have, at least every morning.

45. read (at least) the editorials of (at least) 5 newspapers daily
No progress - I did this for a while and then stopped, I guess I didn't have time. I'm going to do this again, starting tomorrow :)

46. get a job I don’t hate
Progress? Maybe? I'm going to be working in an amusement park selling tickets. The pay is lousy, but the perks are kinda good.. :) Let's hope it's not horrible.

47. maintain a good basic knowledge of everything i’m interested in
No progress :( except for media-related things, because of the entrance exams.

48. watch the Daily Show every day
49. watch Democracy Now every day

Some progress - I have been watching the Daily Show every now and then, but the DN.. no. I should. I will.

50. polish my English skills – especially grammar
No progress - obviously. I will.

51. go to japan again (with m)
52. visit london again
no progress :(

53. have a place for each item I own
No progress - unfortunately! I'm trying.

54. keep my clothes tidy
Some progress? I'm selling/donating away all the clothes I don't need, thus making more room for my favorite clothes.

55. try to avoid overly-packaged foods/goods/anything
No progress - Oh God. Ok, I admit - I've been buying instant soups/noodles which are over-packaged like crazy. And popsicles, the same story. But uhh, I have been having some difficulty with eating, and I'm excusing myself until the entrance exams. I guess it's more important that I'm eating at least something.

56. keep my computer organized
No progress - it's still a bloody mess.

57. bake the most amazing chocolate cake ever
Some progress? I'm not sure if it was the most amazing ever, but I did bake a chocolate cake for an anime convention. It was very rich and heavy, and tasted a-ma-zing with ice cream.

58. keep my home beautiful and organized
No progress: it looks like a small atom bomb exploded in here.

59. be a baking guru
Some progress. WELL. I learned to make AND to frost pink cupcakes! They were amazing, but I still have a long way to go..

60. learn to make my own clothes
No progress - I've been gathering some tips but.. no time, no equipment.

61. learn 25 delicious dishes by heart
No progress.

62. save some money: put at least one euro a day in a jar
Some.. progress? Maybe? I've been putting my loose change in that jar but alas, also used some of it to buy food. I'm planning to save some money during the summer - maybe I'll explain my master plan later.

63. love, come what may
? i've been loving, but it's difficult sometimes - stress eats away my feelings.

64. be stronger: be less afraid: be less self-conscious
This has been difficult, I have to admit. I'm more in peace with myself than before, but it's so difficult.

65. (secret goal)

66. cut out those people whom I have nothing in common with. (remember I don’t have to please everybody)
.. progress :)

67. learn to listen better
I'm pretty sure there's no progress with this one :(

68. get a tattoo of a moth on my back
No progress.

69. never drink champagne ever, ever again
Progress - I mean, I haven't been drinking champagne!

70. learn to knit
No progress - maybe next winter!

71. go to a gay pride parade.
No progress, yet - but oh I will, if I just have time to do it.

72. buy a camera
No progress - no money.

73. get my ears pierced (tragus!)
No progress - no money.

74. find a hobby
No progress :( Maybe next fall?

75. participate in adayinmylife
76. learn to play the piano again
77. watch every movie featuring Audrey Hepburn
78. move out of this overly-expensive (if lovely) apartment
79. own & use coco mademoiselle
80. find the perfect pair of sneakers
81. learn walk with heels without insecurity

87. go hiking for more than overnight, at least once.

88. get a cool haircut and love it.
No progress - but I'm getting a haircut soon! Here's hoping it's, er, 'cool'.

89. grow herbs
90. actually use said herbs

No progress but weell.. I'm planning to plant basil soon.

91. learn how to light a fire

93. be able to dance DDR in heavy level
94. drive a car whenever I have a chance: to keep up the skills
95. complete the “Photo 365” challenge (0/365)

no progress.

96. go to movies at least 10 times
Progress! My girlfriend C and I went to see Watchmen. I really liked it, despite what everyone says. I haven't read the graphic novels though, so that might be it. And this makes it, what 3/10?

no progress! I'd really want to, though.

99. fix my Sims 2.

Instead of giving in..

As you may have deduced from my lack of updating, I have been rather overwhelmed by these goals, uni, approaching summer and my social life lately. Even more, I've been feeling uncharacteristically drowsy, tired and depressed. What's even more alarming are the almost-daily headaches and dizziness.
I'm getting my bloodwork done sometime next week, perhaps it's anemia or something of that sort.

Until I feel better, I've decided to narrow down my goals and focus on just 5 goals at the time. That way I can try to achieve at least something instead of just flailing (and failing..) around and trying to do all at once.

1) run at least 5 times a week
2) stretch every day
3) maintain a healthy weight
4) focus on uni (trying to get everything 'ready' before leading)
5) keep my home beautiful & organized.

Oh, and some small progress:

#96 - go to the movies at least 10 times.

My friend Miia and I went to see Milk. Guess what?

I. LOVED. IT. Go see it if you haven't. I rarely cry while watching a movie, and even I felt somewhat weepy afterwards. I tried to recruit my own little demonstration ("civil right or civil war! gay rights now!"), but sadly, I couldn't recruit 1000 people in an hour, I couldn't recruit even my girlfriend. ("I'd be awful with that kinda stuff", she said. Boo.)

aghh

I know, I haven't been updating in ages, and I have no excuses. I try to report at least some progress today. Hang on?

Saturday, January 10, 2009

quick morning update.

I'm getting so obsessed with my (newly-working!) Sims 2 that it's not funny anymore. I love custom content and downloaded loads of it yesterday. I wonder if I get my school work done if this continues..

It's been snowing like crazy over here, finally. Although Finland is known for its snowy landscapes, global warming has hit hard here too. Southern Finland rarely gets snow even in the middle of the winter, and although I live in Tampere, not in the very south, there has been no snow for weeks. I would take some picture if only I had a camera..

#1 run a marathon
#3 run at least 5 times a week

I have to find out some solutions to get rid of the pain lingering on my left knee. It's impossible to try to run a marathon or even 5 times a week if you have to walk half of your route in order to keep the knee happy.

High arches and low ones. Bow legs and knock knees. Too little strengthening. Too little stretching. Too many miles. Too many hills. And those are just the major culprits. Another one: the huge number of strides that a runner takes in a week, month, year--about 1,400 per mile. Each stride sends a jolt up your legs and through your knees.
, says Runnersworld's article about knees. I have high arches, I don't strech too much, I have (in one time of my little life) ran over 4 hours a day (yes, I was sick).. Uhh. I wonder if there even is a way to fix this.

#54 keep my clothes tidy
I decided to my laundry on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and to iron them on Thursdays and Sundays. Just trying this one out, we'll see how it goes.

More later!
It's only morning here in Finland, anyway :)

Progress! finally, at least some.

I spend my morning checking at others progess updates at the official LJ-community.
Why does it seem that everyone else is way ahead of me?
Maybe I'm the turtle in this race - slowly but oh so surely..

BUT. I've managed to do something.

Presenting,

completed (the first one):
#99 fix my sims 2.

That is to say: yay it works! Took some time & effort, but now the flickering and other graphical errors are so marginal I can tolerate them. Still have no idea why it does that, guess I'll never know.

& then,
in progress

(not counting the, um, 'daily dares'. It would take me ages to report every day that yes, i've drank two glasses of water so consider them DONE for the day if not otherwise suggested)

#1 run a marathon
.
The great running plan in Runnersworld.com helped me last year (when I almost ran the marathon but then suffered a slight knee injury and alas, couldn't). Also, the Training Log really helps the control freaks like me to keep track of my progess efficiently.

#4 be able to do 50 pushups
#6 get stomach definition

I decided to workout after every run - runnersworld helps me with this too with amazing collection of abs workouts and such. I situps and such absolutely boring and most of the time, even undoable (my back doesn't bend much, a built-in error in my otherwise perfect body.. err..), but I'll sure try.

#46 get a job I don't hate
Ok now. I've send Internet applications to the three biggest grocery store chains, to one major kiosk chain, to Finnkino, to video rental places, et cetera, et cetera.. and I keep an eye on the job vacancies.. For the summer, I'm planning to apply to the amusement park Särkänniemi

#52 visit london again
This MIGHT happen this summer. Unlikely, but..

#93 be able to dance DDR in heavy level
For ages, I've had no cable connecting my dance mat to my computer, but today I finally got around to buy it (online, so it takes a couple days for it to arrive but anyway)

#96 go to movies at least 10 times
I TOTALLY FORGOT - 1/10. My girlfriend M and I went to see High School Musical III in Helsinki almost a week ago. Yeees, I know, low-culture, mainstream, sugary fluff - but I just adore the whole silliness and the awfulness of it. M was really grumpy at first, "do we really have to" et cetera, but when she actually saw the movie she told me to download the parts I & II also.. the power of awful musicals is contagious I guess.. :)

Why, Sims 2, why?

Uhh. Yesterday was supposed to be a good day.
I was supposed to cook my Healthy Yummy Food, eat in peace, write some essays.. WRONG. I spent the whole evening and night sobbing in frustration.

Q: What happened?
A: My graphics card (Radeon HD 3850) arrived.
Q: But isn't that supposed to mean that your Sims 2 works perfectly?
A: Yes, it SHOULD work perfectly. It doesn't.

The thing is, I've had issues with Sims 2 since April. I have all the extensions and the I really like the game. First, the new graphic card Dad installed didn't agree with the game, no matter what we did. I sort-of gave up until December, when Dad came here and installed a new graphic card which proved to be too old and inefficient in order to run the game smoothly. We then bought a very new, cute, supposedly very good graphic card (Radeon HD 3850, as I mentioned) and.. yeah.

C and I installed the card perfectly enough, I later downloaded all the drivers and updates and.. well, all, but the effing game just won't work. My Dad, living 300 miles away, took over my computer (with a cute little progam called TeamViewer) and tried to find out what went wrong.

We got the game working by midnight, but it still flickers and flashes black once in a while. So annoying, and therefore I can't say that the goal #99 would be done. I want the game work like it should work, I just don't know what to do anymore.
